WP5: Mapping current actions and future priority targets of wastewater surveillance
Wastewater surveillance of poliovirus and illicit drugs has a longstanding history and existing networks in many parts of the world, including several EU Member States. Since beginning of COVID-19 pandemic, an increasing interest and multiple important initiatives have been launched at the EU level and globally towards more comprehensive use of wastewater surveillance for public health action.
The aim of this work package is to collect and assess knowledge and identify gaps based on the experience of the main actors in the field. From this, priorities in wastewater monitoring will be defined for selected targets at European and global level.
Objectives
- Conduct a system mapping to identify relevant wastewater surveillance actors and stakeholders and activity levels in each EU MS.
- Co-create region-specific priority lists and groups of the wastewater surveillance targets with justifications.
- Identify the specific surveillance targets for respiratory viruses, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), poliovirus and non-poliovirus enteroviruses, emerging pathogens, chemical substances and other health-related biomarkers by scoping reviews.
- Define in collaboration the objective(s) and surveillance schemes for these main groups of targets.
- Describe, for each group of targets, the current implementation status for wastewater surveillance as a part of public health surveillance systems.
