New information on the Riga workshop | 2–4 June 2026

Wastewater surveillance training on AMR and chemical analysis of illicit drugs

As previously announced, the second capacity-building workshop will take place in Riga, Latvia, from 2 to 4 June 2026. As the date approaches, we are pleased to share additional information on the structure and organisation of the event.

This workshop is designed as a hands-on, practice-oriented training targeting technical and laboratory professionals working in wastewater-based surveillance. Due to the practical nature of the sessions and laboratory capacity constraints, participation is limited and subject to a selection process.

Please note that this workshop is intended for members of the EU-WISH project. All relevant information regarding participation and application procedures has been shared internally.

The workshop will be structured around two complementary training pillars:

  • Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

The AMR training will be divided in one training on detection of AMR through culture (with a focus on carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales and ESBL-producing E. coli) and in one training on detection of AMR through qPCR. Participation is limited to 24 participants, with a balanced representation between culture-based and PCR-based approaches.

  • Chemical analysis of illicit drugs in wastewater

This training will focus on analytical methods for the detection and monitoring of illicit drugs and other chemical substances in wastewater. Approximately 20 participants are expected to take part in this training.

Further practical details will be shared directly with selected participants in due course.
