Hands-on NGS laboratory training for wastewater surveillance

Registration open – limited places available.

Sciensano and Statens Serum Institut (SSI), with support from the EU-WISH Joint Action, are organising an on-site hands-on training on next-generation sequencing (NGS) for wastewater surveillance, taking place on 24 - 26 March 2026 in Brussels, Belgium.

The training is primarily targeted at wet-lab practitioners involved in wastewater sample processing and sequencing workflows. The programme includes extensive hands-on laboratory work (PCR amplification, purification, quality control, Illumina and Oxford Nanopore library preparation), complemented by guided downstream data analysis and interpretation using the Galaxy platform.
This training is not intended as a bioinformatics-only course.

Due to laboratory capacity, the number of participants will be limited. Applicants will be selected based on their direct involvement in wastewater surveillance activities and the expected impact of the training in their institutions or national systems.

A limited number of places will be made available to external participants, with priority given to LMICs, subject to the availability of mobility funding.

Interested candidates are invited to complete the expression-of-interest survey by Friday 16 January 2026:
